Teacher FAQs
Benefits
Why should I use School Lists?
Amazon School Lists makes communicating with parents about classroom supplies quick, easy, and accurate. Whether you teach Kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, or high school, your students' parents will know exactly which materials their children will need and where to find the list whenever they need it. Your students will arrive prepared to work on the first day of school. You will find Amazon School Lists easy to maintain, modify, and carry forward each term, so you can concentrate on education.
Can teachers from any type of school create a list?
Yes. K-12 teachers from public, private, parochial, or summer schools can create and share Amazon School Lists.
Registration Process
How do teachers sign up for Amazon School Lists?
Only registered customers can create or use Amazon School Lists. Teachers (and parents) who are already registered for an Amazon account can sign in and go to School Lists to start building their lists. If you don't have an Amazon account, creating one is easy--and FREE; just visit www.amazon.com and hover over "Hello. Sign in" next to the search box. In the pop-up menu that appears, click "New customer? Start here." to register. Then go to School Lists to create your lists.
My husband/wife/partner already has an Amazon account. Can I create an account as well?
Yes. In fact, you will need your own Amazon.com account to use School Lists.
What if the parents of my students aren't Amazon customers?
Registering as an Amazon customer is free and open to anyone at www.amazon.com. Teachers also have the option to print their Amazon School Lists and distribute them offline.
Building a School List
How do I get started?
If you're not a registered Amazon customer, take a few moments to open an account. If you are registered, go to School Lists and choose the Teacher portal. You can watch a short video on Amazon School Lists, if you like, or follow the prompts to find your school in our registry and begin creating your school supplies list.
My school isn't listed in your registry. Can I still create a School List?
Yes, you can. Our schools registry is quite extensive, but if your school is not on the list, it's easy to add it manually when you create and publish a list. A school name and supply list entered this way (manually) cannot be found by name; parents will be able to view the list and buy school supplies only by using the link shared by teachers.
Can anyone such as a parent classroom volunteer create a School List?
Yes, anyone with an Amazon account can create a list. However, only the person who creates the list can edit the list.
Do you have suggested school supplies listed by grade?
Yes. On the page where you're creating your list, you'll see a drop-down menu for suggested lists for every grade from Kindergarten to middle school and high school.
How do I find items to place on my list?
There are three ways to search for pencils, calculators, and other school supplies directly from the page where you're creating your list. 1) You'll see a search box inside the first tab. Enter the item you're looking for and click "Go." Search will return and display several choices. 2) Below the search box, product category tabs such as "Erasers," "Scissors," and "Backpacks" let you browse by category. Click on a tab to see our selection. 3) View Amazon-recommended school supplies by selecting your grade from the drop-down menu under the product category tabs. In addition, you can search the entire Amazon website by using the general search box. Book covers, dry-erase markers, rulers, and any other school supplies returned in general search will not display the "Add to list" button. Instead, select the item you want from the search results. On the product page, click the "Add to Wish List" button on the right-hand side below the "Add to Cart" button, and select your School List to add the item.
Note: Items featured on our School Lists page are more likely to be fully stocked at all times. For that reason, we recommend selecting items from the pre-filled lists rather than items returned in general search.
Do I have to choose from the items listed in the pre-filled tabs?
No. You can browse pre-filled product category tabs, view Amazon-recommended school supplies by grade level, search for products from the School List page, or search the entire Amazon website for all the construction paper, glue sticks, markers, and thumb drives you want. However, we recommend that you select items from the pre-filled tabs and menus because they are more likely to be fully stocked at all times.
How do I add items to my School List?
There are two ways. If you're looking at items under the tabs or menus in School Lists, click the "Add to list" button below the product image. If you're on the item's product page, look for the "Add to Wish List" button on the right-hand side underneath the "Add to Cart" area. When you click this drop-down menu and select a School List, the item will be added to it.
How can I mark certain things like special pens and particular binders as optional versus required?
Click "Edit details" after you add the item to your list. You will then be able to check the "required" or "optional" box.
What if I want to list a general item and let parents choose what they want to buy?
Find the item on the School List and click the "Edit details" option below the product image. A pop-up window should appear. Simply check "Similar items acceptable" alongside each item to which it applies. Then parents know they can choose comparable items or look for the best deals on school supplies. For example, if the list shows blunt-tip scissors tagged with "Similar items acceptable," parents will be able to choose Crayola, Fiskar, or any other brand we offer, at a range of prices.
How do I tell parents they can choose their Kindergartener's favorite color folder or a different type of calculator for middle school math, if they like?
The School List form includes areas for you to comment on each item by clicking the "Edit details" option below the product image. A pop-up window should appear where you can edit your comments. For example, you can add notes like "Each folder should be a different color," "Low-odor markers preferred," or "Calculator should have a graphing function."
How do I edit a School List?
First, go to your School Lists page and select the list you want to edit. On the "Add-to/Edit List" page, click "Edit list details."
To add an item: Find the pencils, tissues or other school supplies you want, and click the "Add to list" button at the bottom of the product image. (If adding an item from Amazon general search, click "Add to Wish List" from the product page, and select the appropriate list.)
To delete an item, change quantity, or add/edit/delete a comment: Find the item on the School List and click the "Edit details" option below the product image. A pop-up window should appear and, in the bottom right-hand corner, click the option "Delete item," "Change quantity," "Add comment," or "Delete comment" to make the changes you want.
Important note on editing lists: Any changes to your School List will be saved automatically, but you must click "Publish" for your list to be visible to parents. Don't forget to "Share" the edited list by sending parents the link in an email with a message about how the list has been updated.
What if I'd like to create multiple back-to-school supply lists?
You can create as many lists as you want. Just make it clear to parents which they should use. Go to School Lists and choose the Teacher portal. Follow the prompts to find your school in our registry and open one of your lists. On the Add-to/Edit list page, click "Create a list." We recommend saving lists under different list names, preferably with a specific classroom or class title and date or school term. Click "Publish," and then share your list with parents by sending an email with the list's link.
When I create multiple lists or a new list for the next school year, can I copy the parents' names and email addresses from the original list that I distributed?
No. You will need to enter parent email addresses on each new list that you share.
What if an item that I select for my School List runs out of stock?
We have carefully selected the school supplies featured on School Lists and our goal is to have them in stock at all times. For that reason, we recommend selecting items from the pre-filled tabs on the "Add-to/Edit list" page rather than items returned in general search. In case an item does run out of stock, parents can still back-order the item or choose another product if the teacher has indicated that a similar item is acceptable.
What's the difference between my School List and my Shopping Cart?
Your Shopping Cart is your personal shopping basket for things you want to buy. Items added to your Shopping Cart will not be added to your School List. Your School List is the supply list that you share with parents so they can purchase all the pencils, markers, and paper their children will need for school.
How do I control access to my School List?
Once your list is published, any registered Amazon user can view and save it. You are the only one who can change it. Remember, private information, such as email addresses, is not viewable.
How do I delete a School List?
Select the "Delete" button on your list page and the list will be permanently removed.
What if I want to hide the list but not delete it?
Select "Unpublish" on the list page to deactivate the link and remove the list from the School Lists registry page. The list will remain on your School Lists page for future reference.
Can parents add items to the list?
When parents choose to view and save a School List, it is actually copied into the Wish List section of their Amazon account. They can add items like laptops, software, gym socks, sneakers—whatever they like—to their own list without changing the original list you shared with all parents.
Do the parents have to purchase their supplies on Amazon?
No. They can print your list and shop wherever they choose.
Sharing a School List
How do I notify parents that I've created a School List?
On the publishing page of your list, you'll find space to write an email informing your students' parents that your supplies list is now available and providing a link to it at Amazon.com. Enter the email addresses of all the parents and click "Send."
How can I print the list?
On the publishing page of your School List, select "Print preview," and then click "Print" to print copies of your list. The URL link to your specific list will be included on the printed page as long as you print after publishing your list.
How do I share my list with other teachers?
There are a couple of ways to share your list with colleagues. You can simply include their email addresses when you send your list to parents. Or, you can send the list separately with a new message to different email addresses. We recommend saving the list under a slightly different name when sending it to a new list of recipients.
I've created an updated list. How do I communicate this to my parents?
After you finish updating the list, click "Publish." From the Share page, send your parents an email with a link to the list, noting the changes that you made. Parents can then go to Amazon.com to view and save the new list. The URL link will still be the same as the first version of the list.
How can I tell my colleagues about the Amazon School Lists program?
The easiest way is to send them an email with the link www.amazon.com/gp/school-lists . If you have a list you want to share with colleagues, include their email addresses when you share the list with parents. You can also choose to send the list to colleagues from the Share page.
Privacy
What, if anything, does Amazon do with the parent email addresses that I enter to share the list?
We use the parent email addresses to send out your School List. We know that you care how information about you is used and shared, and we appreciate your trust that we will do so carefully and sensibly. Information about our customers is an important part of our business, and we are not in the business of selling it to others.
