Checks, Please! The Case for Gingham Has Never Been Sweeter
Gingham manages to be at once utterly
all-American and redolent of the South of France and its beachy heyday
in the ’50s and ’60s. Think of that sweet, corn-fed gingham pinafore
Judy Garland donned for her stint in Oz, or the pink and white Vichy
check dress Brigitte Bardot said her “I do’s” in. Despite a certain
retro appeal, the pattern enjoyed a major revival on the Spring
runways. Bottega Veneta’s gauzy dresses came with softly shorn edges and
haphazard sheer layers. Michael Kors’ interpretation was an
appropriately earnest one for a designer so quintessentially American;
he sent out a pretty A-line halter dress in Kelly green as well as a
crinkled skirt and swingy jacket set. But perhaps the most cogent case
for the pattern’s comeback came from Joseph Altuzarra. He showed 10
looks in the delicate check, including a gingham button-down and pencil
skirt modeled by Anna Ewers, who looked every bit a dead ringer for
Bardot herself.
